Mathematics is a global language which has been developed over hundreds of years. It has been used to solve complex problems, provide logical reasoning and structure. Mathematics is essential to everyday life and is vital to other subjects including science, technology, computing, business and finance and engineering to name a few.
Literacy Intent Statement
We want our students to be confident in using disciplinary vocabulary in maths when explaining their reasoning and justifying their answers. In our lessons we use key words and phrases, so students can gain a better understanding of the maths curriculum. During problem-solving we teach model reading strategies to support students to read like mathematicians. We encourage the students to talk about their maths using the key vocabulary and during metacognitive reflection before they write.
At St Columba’s we want to raise confident mathematicians who are fluent, can reason mathematically and enjoy solving problems.
