The side traveled a long way to play Homewood School in the Kent French Cup ¼ Final. On arrival the pitch was very poor and this was very much a leveller in the game itself. St Columba’s enjoyed more possession throughout the first half but failed to create many open chances. However, Homewood, caused problems through their direct approach and Finn O’Mara managed to clear two attempts at goal off of the line. The second half was quite similar although St Columba’s did start to create clear opportunities. The bar was struck twice and the ball saved on the line due to a pool of water/mud. However, with the end of the game in sight, Homewood managed the break the deadlock and scored a looped shot from the angle of the penalty area. This spurred St Columba’s into a desperate assault on the Homewood goal. After a clear penalty decision was turned down, one was given for a handball and St Columba’s had their chance. Callum Flynn coolly dispatched the penalty to take the game to extra-time. Extra-time proved fruitless for both teams and, with light fading, it was the dreaded penalty shootout. 2 missed penalties from ST Columba’s game Homewood two chances to win the game. However, a brilliant save from Sean Doyle and a shot over the bar meant that it was sudden death. Donald Cole scored his penalty with a firm finish into the corner. Sean Doyle stepped up and saved the Homewood penalty to win the game for St Columba’s. Massive sigh of relief from all!
