MFL Department

The aim of the Modern Languages Department is to encourage proficiency in language learning. Learning a foreign language offers students an insight into another culture and broadens their horizons. In this age where travel and commerce stretch further around the globe, it is important   that pupils have some familiarity with a language other than their own. All pupils study French in Years 7 and 8 and are given the opportunity to carry on at GCSE Level.

Year 7
Autumn Term 1 Grammar Revision (English).
Physical description, class objects, numbers: Pupils will learn how to conjugate and use “avoir / être” in the present tense (best pupils: with more than one pronoun/everyone: at least with “je”) and to count In French (best ones: until 100, everyone up to 20); nouns (masculine, feminine and plural); articles and adjectives and their agreement with nouns.
Autumn Term 2 Birthdays, colours, countries: All of the above + present tense regular verbs in -ER (best pupils with more than one pronoun / everyone with “je”); negative form (ne….pas); days of the week and months.
Spring Term 1 Family and personalities:  all of the above + present tense regular verbs in – IR, (best pupils with more than one pronoun/everyone with “je”). Interrogative form.
Spring Term 2 Time, timetable, school, clothes- all of the above + present tense verbs in –re +“aller + faire” (best pupils with more than one pronoun/everyone with “je”).   Simple connectives (et, mais, parce que, car, cependant).
Summer Term 1 Sports, free time activities, food- Revise and consolidate the present tense. (Best pupils: start using the present tense without support. Everyone uses present tense with support) Partitive article (du, de la, de l’, des).
Summer Term 2 Various topics- Revise and consolidate all that has been learned during the year.
Year 8
Autumn Term 1 Grammar Revision.
Revision present tense, used in the context of Y7 topics (therefore revision of Y7 vocabulary as well).
Autumn Term 2 Daily routines – Reflexive verbs in the present tense (best pupils with more than one pronoun / everyone with “je”).
Spring Term 1 Hobbies/free time – All of the above + past tense (passé compose with avoir) (best pupils with more than one pronoun / everyone with “je”).
Partitive article (du, de la, de l’, des).
Time expressions
Spring Term 2 Holidays – All of the above + past tense (passé compose with être) (best pupils with more than one pronoun / everyone with “je”).
How to say “to”: au, à la, aux, en, à.
Summer Term 1 Various topics- Revise and consolidate the le passé composé. (Best pupils: start using the past tense without support. Everyone uses past tense with support).
Comparative.
Summer Term 2 Various topics – Revise and consolidate le passé composé and all that has been learned during the year. Possessive adjectives.
Year 9
Autumn Term 1 Grammar Revision.
Revision past tense, used in the context of Y8 topics (therefore revision of Y8 vocabulary as well).
Autumn Term 2 School and education – Past tense (l’imparfait) best pupils with more than one pronoun / everyone with “je”). The superlative.
Spring Term 1 Various topics- Revise and consolidate l’imparfait. (Best pupils: start using the past tense without support. Everyone uses past tense with support).
Saying “this” or “these”.
Spring Term 2 Various topics – All of the above + the near future (le futur proche) (best pupils with more than one pronoun / everyone with “je”).
Summer Term 1 Various topics- Revise and consolidate le futur proche. (Best pupils: start using the past tense without support. Everyone uses past tense with support).
Question words.
Summer Term 2 Various topics- Revise and consolidate the present, past and future tenses. (Best pupils use a variety of tenses without support. Everyone uses a variety of tenses with support).
